SAFETY LEADERSHIP FOR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS
Every science lab, shop, studio and makerspace in your building runs under a duty of care that ends with you. When a student is hurt, the questions are not about the lesson alone: was the teacher trained, was the room over its limit, was the plan current, was the warning acted on. Science Safety gives principals, assistant principals and district leaders the short training that answers those questions before they are asked, and the records that prove it.
Pathways for elementary, middle and high school administrators, and a certificate for the whole district. Built to the Science Safety Teaching Standard.

The duty of care is yours, whether or not you teach science
Courts ask a plain question after a school accident: did the people in charge act as a reasonably prudent person would have. For an administrator that means knowing what the labs and shops in your building require, making sure the teachers in them were trained before the first hazardous lesson, keeping the Chemical Hygiene Plan current, respecting room occupancy on the master schedule, and acting when a teacher raises a concern. None of it needs a science degree. All of it needs to be done, dated and on file.
Science Safety’s administrator pathways are short, written for your role, and end in a certificate you can put in the file. They are the fastest way to go from not knowing the obligations to meeting them.
Science and STEAM Safety Awareness for Elementary School Administrators
Hands-on science, STEAM and makerspace activity in the lower grades, and what a principal has to have in place for it.
Science and STEAM Safety Awareness for Middle School Administrators
The year chemicals, heat and tools arrive in the classroom. Safety awareness across the whole building, for the people who run it.
Secondary School Administrators: Principal and Vice Principal Safety Awareness
Chemistry labs, CTE shops, art studios and makerspaces under one roof, and the principal who answers for all of them.

What an administrator is expected to have in place
- Every teacher of a hands-on class trained before the first hazardous lesson, with a dated record
- A written Chemical Hygiene Plan for the building, reviewed every year, with named people in it
- A master schedule that respects the posted occupancy of every lab and shop
- Chemical storage that is locked, ventilated and inventoried, with a disposal route
- Eyewash, showers, hoods and extinguishers tested and logged
- A written response to every safety concern a teacher raises
- An incident file that is honest and complete

The rules name the district, and the district means you.
The OSHA Laboratory Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1450, and the Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, bind the employer: the district. They require a written Chemical Hygiene Plan, labels and safety data sheets, and training for every employee who works with hazardous chemicals, before the work starts. State law adds eye-protection acts, fire-code editions, class-size and inspection rules. The National Science Teaching Association’s position is that principals, supervisors and superintendents share the responsibility for establishing and maintaining the safety program, not the teacher alone.
Science Safety’s administrator training walks through those obligations one at a time, in the order a principal meets them, and the state compliance sheets put your own state’s rules on one page.

Ask Yourself
Which teachers in your building have a dated safety training record from this school year?
When was your Chemical Hygiene Plan last reviewed, and could you put your hand on it today?
Is any science class on the master schedule above the posted occupancy of its room?
What happened the last time a teacher told you a lab was unsafe, and is the answer in writing?
Do you know what your state requires of your building beyond the federal rules?

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The administrator pathways assume no science background. They explain what each rule requires of the building and of you, in plain words, and leave the chemistry to the chemists.
A few hours, self-paced, in short modules you can take between meetings. Each ends in a quiz and a certificate that anyone can verify on this site.
Yes. Districts enroll administrators and teachers through a group purchase, and the district office can see who has completed what, which is the training record the district needs to keep.
Take The Case for a Chemical Hygiene Officer in Every School, which is free, then the Chemical Safety Management Certificate for the district office, and the administrator pathway for each building. Your state’s compliance sheet tells you what sits on top.
