Hang this poster beside your band saw, so the rules are in front of whoever is about to make a cut.
What is on the poster
Every cut
- Guards on, band wheels enclosed. All of the blade except the working portion must be guarded, and the wheels fully encased (29 CFR 1910.213(i)).
- Blade guard 1/8 to 1/4 inch above the stock. Set the guard about 1/8 inch (3 mm) to 1/4 inch (6 mm) above the material being cut.
- Check blade tension and tracking. The blade must be under proper tension and run freely against the upper and lower guide rollers.
- Keep your hands to the side of the blade. Keep them out of the line of the cut and braced on the table. Use a push stick near the blade.
- Make relief cuts before tight curves. Release cuts keep the blade from binding in scroll-type work.
- Stopping mid-cut? Hold the stock and shut down. Wait for the blade to stop before removing the piece. Never back the stock out while the blade is moving.
Never stop a band saw blade by pushing stock against it after the power is off.
