Become the Chemical Hygiene Officer people actually follow
A Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) can know every rule, hold a signed appointment and run a well-built program, and still find that people work around it. The difference is rarely knowledge. It is how the CHO shows up: what they notice, when they speak, how they ask, which promises they keep, and whether people bring them problems early or hide them. Being an Effective Chemical Hygiene Officer is an online course about that part of the role.
It is written for CHOs in education (school districts, private and independent schools) and in industry (research, testing, quality control and manufacturing labs), in equal measure. Every lesson teaches one behavior, then shows it in a school or district and in a company or lab.

- Know Yourself: how your safety requests come across, your default under pressure, written authority and earned authority, and catching your own risk drift.
- Read the Situation: the three levels of situation awareness, when to stop work now and when to talk later, whose problem it is, and reading the person as well as the hazard.
- Read the Place: formal power and real influence, what each group values, the rhythm of the school year or the site, and small warning signs.
- Speak Early: your first ninety days (or a reset), no surprises for leaders, bad news delivered early and in person, and closing the loop on every report.
- Communicate to Be Heard: asking instead of telling, correcting someone with others watching, saying no with an alternative, and writing that gets read.
- Daily and Weekly Habits: the walk-around as a colleague, the protected hour and the one-line log, small promises kept, and how long a habit really takes.
- Earn Trust, Make It Safe to Speak Up: how trust is built and spent, thanking every report, listening to the person who knows the work, and being a partner, not the police.
- Stay Effective: being the unpopular voice, protecting your time, burnout and a peer outside your building, and handing over your relationships.
Finish with a playbook, not just a score
Each module ends with a short Practice you do in your own building or site, flip cards and a quiz. The eight Practices build your Effective CHO Playbook. You rate yourself on 32 statements at the start and again at the end, so you can see your own change. Ten fillable forms are included.
