What is on the poster
In every storeroom
- Every container labeled. A GHS label with the chemical name and its hazards, dropper bottles included. Solutions made here add the preparation date.
- Store by hazard class, never alphabetically. Check the safety data sheet. Keep incompatibles apart: they can react, fume or explode.
- Flammables in the flammables cabinet. Away from sunlight and ignition sources, doors closed and locked. A refrigerator only if it is explosion-proof.
- Corrosives in the corrosives cabinet, acids apart from bases. Nitric acid isolated, and never beside acetic acid. Never under a sink, never on metal shelving.
- Toxins and poisons locked, access restricted. The smallest quantity, a safer alternative where one exists, and what is no longer needed out as hazardous waste.
- Nothing above eye level, nothing on the floor. Shelves with edge lips, never overcrowded. Spill trays under everything. Gas cylinders chained upright.
Water-reactive metals such as sodium, lithium and potassium go nowhere near a sink or a sprinkler. Peroxide formers such as ethers are dated when received and opened: crystals or layers mean do not move it, get help.
