Hang this poster beside your machines, so every operator checks the guards before every start.
What is on the poster
Before you turn it on
- Every guard is in place and working. Never run a machine with a guard missing, damaged, or bypassed.
- The point of operation is guarded. Guarding must keep every part of your body out of the danger zone (29 CFR 1910.212(a)(3)).
- Belts, pulleys, gears and chains are enclosed. Power transmission parts must be guarded (29 CFR 1910.219).
- Keys and setscrews are flush or covered. Projections on revolving parts must be removed, made flush, or covered (29 CFR 1910.219(h)(1)).
- Lock it out before you clear a jam or adjust it. Isolate the machine from its energy source first (29 CFR 1910.147).
Never reach around, over, or under a guard while a machine is running.
Missing, damaged, or bypassed guard? Do not run the machine. Report it.
Built to the Science Safety Teaching Standard
This poster carries the SSTS mark. Like every Science Safety course, it is built to the Science Safety Teaching Standard (SSTS): every rule on it is taken from the body that governs it, at its current edition, and the source is printed on the poster, so you can check it yourself.
Stay current
When you get this poster, it is saved to your Science Safety account. If we revise the poster, or the Machine Guarding module it comes from changes, we will email you, and the latest version will be waiting under Downloads in your account. Every revision carries its revision number and date at the bottom of the poster, so you can tell at a glance whether the copy on your wall is current.
