WHMIS is Canada’s Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System: one national set of rules for classifying hazardous products and telling the people who work with them what the hazards are, through labels, safety data sheets and training. Every worker who may be exposed to a hazardous product must be trained, and the training must be reviewed at least once a year.
This module is written to the current rules: the Hazardous Products Regulations as amended in December 2022, in force for every supplier and workplace since the transition ended in December 2025. It teaches what changed, so a worker trained on WHMIS 2015 material can bring their knowledge up to date in one sitting.
What the module covers
- What WHMIS is, who has duties under it, and the three worker rights behind it
- The two hazard groups, the 18 physical and 12 health classes, and how categories rank severity
- The ten pictograms and which classes each one marks
- Supplier labels (six elements, in English and French) and workplace labels (three elements)
- The 16-section safety data sheet, and how to read one before work
- The four routes of entry, why smell is not a detector, and the hierarchy of controls
- Six workplace situations to decide, a one-page recap, and a 20-question quiz
Who it is for
Workers, supervisors, school shop and science staff, and anyone in Canada who handles or may be exposed to hazardous products. About one hour of reading and questions. A pass of 80 percent on the quiz earns the certificate, and the quiz may be retaken.
